Asian stories are the new black.
The global popularity of Squid Game shows that Asian entertainment content also has the potential to conquer Western audiences, and Taiwanese dramas in the streaming era are also actively expanding into the international market. This session focuses on the development, production and marketing of Asian stories, and invites producers and showrunners to discuss how Asian stories can overcome language and cultural barriers and become the new favorite of global streaming platforms.
The Asian American Media Alliance (AAMA), is a national network of civil rights and media activism organizations working in conjunction with broadcast, cable, theatrical, streaming and digital media networks and production studios to empower the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities by advocating for our full inclusion and representation in visual entertainment media.
Terris Ko is a US producer currently based in Taipei. His team has a limited series in development with a global streaming platform in the US, and continues to develop both English and Chinese language films and series for global, regional, and local markets. He also serves as an International Advisor to TAICCA, advising TAICCA on strategy and partnerships, and focused on facilitating resources and connections for the Taiwan film/TV community.
Soo Hugh serves as the showrunner, executive producer, and writer of the worldwide success TV series PACHINKO, which received critical acclaim, and plans to continue her partnership with Apple TV+ as co-showrunner in future projects such as The White Darkness. Meanwhile, Hugh is also collaborating with UCP on multiple projects and story incubation programs “The Thousand Miles Project,” which aim to bring AAPI stories to cinematic life and jumpstart fruitful careers in the entertainment industry.
Jamie Lai is the Head of the LA office for Bound Entertainment, a Korean media entertainment company headquartered in Seoul, Korea. Previously a development executive for Pearl Studio (“Over the Moon”, “Abominable”) which produced and packaged Korea-Chinese film and television projects including “Bounty Hunters” starring Lee Min-ho and Tiffany Tang, and “She Was Pretty” starring Dilireba. Lai was formerly an executive with Base FX, an Emmy-award-winning VFX company in China.
