After being away for 13 years, Darren, a medical examiner, has returned to his hometown, Paradise Island. Orphaned and having grown up in misery, he can barely recall his childhood except for a girl named Mia, even though they lost contact after he left the island.

Darren’s return is to investigate a case involving 13 mysterious deaths, which he discovers is linked to an unusual phenomenon called “Life Sharing”. As it turns out, people here can resuscitate family members who have just passed away by “sharing” their lives with them; since the deceased don’t have memories of their death, no one on the island can be sure whether they are really dead or alive.

Darren learns that this phenomenon stems from a failed human experiment, carried out as part of a larger confidential government-funded project called the Human Upgrading Plan. Codenamed “13”, the experiment contains a list of names that includes Mia’s and his own. As he continues to pursue the truth, Darren will face a variety of moral and ethical issues, without realizing that his investigation is the last missing piece of the puzzle…
