Seven contemporary adaptations of western fairy tales retold by seven young Asian filmmakers, turning beautiful childhood memories into dark and ironic ones.
What if the fairy tales we heard from childhood happen right here, right now, in our society?
In our contemporary adaptations of fairy tales, Thumbelina falls into a whirlpool of toxic positivity in order to escape from the male gaze; the emperor’s invisible “new clothes” become a ridiculous scripture; the kind Pea turns a girl into a “princess” who complains about everything; in the post-epidemic era, the Three Little Pigs is retold through three siblings in Taiwan fighting over inherited property; facing her parents’ divorce, a girl refuses to take off her red shoes, but then can never take them off again; and the cursed door from Bluebeard becomes a bug in video games.
Taking place in contemporary society, echoing gender, class, family, politics, and other problems, this is a collection of dark fairy tales told from Asian perspectives.
