A story about an unresolved cold case and family secrets.
In 1964, the discovery of five mangled corpses by residents of a mountain village in Taiwan’s Yunlin county shocked a community. For the general public, this tragic tale of two towns has long since been relegated to the past, but for a mystery writer like Leng yan, the tragedy suggests a connection to a memory lapse of ten years. And so, he sets out for Yunlin to probe the mystery.
SHI Tian, a retired detective who long ago left the world of criminal investigation behind, never managed to shake his regret at having not cracked the “twin towns’ tragedy”. Serendipitously a young man appears, YAO Shi-jie, who claims to have new information in hand. To assist SHI in the investigation of this new lead LIANG Yu-bing, an impulsive and dogged female cop, gets involved at the behest of her commanding officer, sacrificing time off to probe clues. The three protagonists join forces and set out south for the twin townships, never suspecting that a whole new case would emerge before the old one even gets going again as a body surfaces, holding onto pieces of a broken doll, in a barely up-right half-sunk old shack not far from the original murders.
The group pursues both investigations at once and soon discovers that the doll case has everything to do with the “twin towns tragedy”.
